Grab Bag

Today I have several brief things to call attention to, and I'm going to jump right into it.

1. LOLcats

Let me say that I anticipate some heat on this one.  Because, there are a lot of people out there who are still just... totally gung-ho about this meme.  I, for one, was over it after my first couple of viewings.

It's not that I don't like cats.  I like some cats very much.  Particularly my cat.  She is finicky and reclusive and anti-social to a degree, and her personality just fits what I am looking for in a cat.

But I don't like everyone's cat.  And I have seen enough pictures of kittens that I am not even really phased by their inherent cuteness anymore.  And that was before "LOLcats" was even a thing.

I just feel like this particular meme is pandering to the least in me.  It would not have been so bad had it come and gone like any other hipster "neo-geek" phenomenon, but it just kept growing and growing and now it's all over the goddamn internet and now all I can do is roll my eyes every time I see it now.

The breakdown is as follows:
  1. Your cat = not as cute to me as my cat.
  2. Your Arial font = not as cute to me as my Arial font
  3. Your dumb one liner cat jokes = really not funny after the previous 9000 one liner cat jokes
  4. Your chances of berating me about this if you are a lolcat fan = high
To be fair, the official address where all this pre-school-girl humor is going on is here.  You might giggle, and you might find it funny, but not after you have read thirty of them in a row.

2. Toddlers & Tiaras

The outcry in the comments section of the post I did earlier this week about the TLC program "Toddlers & Tiaras" was great.  I was very relieved to see that everyone shared the same sentiment on this issue.  That sentiment essentially amounts to a perception that this television show is little more than child pornography.

One of the vapid, degenerate mothers from "Toddlers" applying makeup to her innocent victim.

An acquaintance of mine mentioned that we ought to write some letters to the producers of this show, to at least make our sentiment known.  No doubt, people have already done this, but I am inclined to agree that I would like my voice to be heard on this matter.  So I am appealing to you guys and gals to tell me how you think we might best accomplish this.  Would there be enough interest here for you to affix your name and last initial and your e-mail address to a collective letter to the producers?  Or would we do better to all individually send unique letters to these scum?  Perhaps I could write a form letter and post it here, and those of you interested could copy/paste the letter into an e-mail and send it off to the people at "TLC".

Do any of you have experience with this kind of thing?  What is the best way to do it?  What would the letter say if you were writing it?  Please let me know, and if you have friends that might be interested in this topic as well, please link them to this post, or to the original "Toddlers" post from a couple of days ago, and hopefully we can get something of meaning done here with our collective disgust for these monsters.

3. Blog News

I'd like to bring light to a benchmark here at In Review:

Five hundred followers?!?! HOLY CRAP!

We got our five hundredth follower sometime last night while I was sleeping and apparently stealing Jera's pillows.  This is astounding to me, and frankly, a little intimidating.  I am very humbled and honored to think that even a fraction of this number of people would be interested in my writing, and I want to thank everyone reading.  You guys are all awesome!

Speaking of awesome followers, allow me to draw your attention to a comment thread left on my very first blog:

It's a little small.  Click the image to see it full sized.

An awesome reader, "Jamie", went back and read my ENTIRE blog.  This (as I said in my comment there) is VERY flattering.  And, frankly, a little bit embarrassing, since I didn't even know what a blog was when I started out.  Being that I didn't know what a blog was, and I had no direction whatsoever, a lot of my first posts lacked any content that could be considered entertaining, I think.  Jamie didn't just make my day though.  Jamie made my week.  Back track to my first blog to get the link to Jamie's blog.

Supplementally: since I have so many readers now, I am going to ask you guys for some direction. The posts here aren't exactly cohesive, although I guess they are still entertaining.  What more could I do around here to make it a better experience?  Any suggestions are welcome via comment/e-mail/twitter/whatever.  I live to serve.

4. In the News

In the news, Elena Kagan was approved as the new Supreme Court Justice, and she is still ugly.

I promise, this is the last time I will use this picture.

This makes little difference, since the guy who she replaces, Justice Stevens, was pretty much just as far left as she is, and was a consistant liberal rallying point in the court.

I still feel that, since Kagan said in the 80's (or whenever) that she thought the Supreme Court nomination process amounted to little more than a farce, or a scripted charade, she should have been a little more direct herself in the way she answered congress' questions.  That said, I am glad that she will be a supporter of gay rights, although even there, I find it disconcerting that she was not more vociferous regarding the military recruiting deal at Harvard.  (Kagan had initially backed the opinion that because of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of the United States armed forces, the military should not be allowed to recruit on an open and non-discriminating university campus.  She later softened on the issue for political reasons.)  I think that that institution should have full freedom to stop military recruiters from doing their thing on that campus.

I also get the sneaking suspicion, as many have, that she may end up being a "rubber stamp" for Obama during the rest of his presidency.  She consistently seems to lean towards the side of big government and expanded presidential power, which as you can see here, is a shit idea.

-------

Proposition 8 (the ban on gay marriage) in California was overturned by a federal judge this week, signaling that once in a great goddamn while the government actual errs on the side of the liberty of it's constituents.

I will be happy to see this end up in the Supreme Court.  We're talking about human rights here.  We're talking about allowing every American to be a first class citizen.  This shit is very important to me.  The liberty of Americans everywhere (and humans everywhere) should be the thing that government protects most vehemently, not takes away.

President Obama disagrees, as we see in this quote from an article in yesterday's New York Times:
"But for backers of same-sex marriage rights, Wednesday’s court victory brought a reminder that one powerful voice is not in their camp: President Obama...
...The president does oppose same-sex marriage..."
I ask again why the socially liberal and the socially progressive in America like this guy so much.  Or why they are, at least, giving him on a pass on this kind of shit.

-------

Last piece of news: Wycleff Jean is going to run for President of Haiti.  Apparently, he is some kind of "rapper"... or something.

Ha Ha Ha.  Really?!?

This is a great example of American arrogance, especially as it applies to show business.

Hey Wycleff: You dumb arrogant prick.  Why don't you just sell those cars and send the money to the people in Haiti, instead of going down there to be a pompous nutsack and embarrassing our entire country in the process?

Better yet, keep your cars, shut the hell up, and go fuck yourself.

5. Final Thoughts

I want to leave you with the following clip of Rush Limbaugh, talking about the Proposition 8 thing.  I understand that Rush is an entertainer, and that he makes his money by being deliberately inflammatory. I also understand him to be quite literate and well versed in politics and the like.

But the guy is, in the following clip, talking about fucking CIVIL WAR in response to the Proposition 8 ruling.  There's a line somewhere.  Is he crossing it?

I enjoy having my freedom.  I think Rush is enjoying his freedom.  Why are these people so adamant about abridging the freedoms of others?!

Let me know what you think on this grotesque mental-purge of a post.  And, by the way, to anyone who is worried about it still: I did not have my nipples removed.

Love

Best. Post. Ever. PERIOD

Laughed my ass of when you said "This is the last time I'll show this picture, I swear". Why do I not believe you? Bahahhahaha

503 followers? Famosity is yours booger head!

And seriously you are totally hating on the LOLcatz but I am too because in my brain I cannot conceive that those facckers are making thousands and thousands while we write and draw our asses off and make ten cents per day with Google Ads (on a good day). It's a travesty I tell ya'. Let's make our own site! Chupacabras must be involved because I love them. And bats!

In Spanish there is a saying that goes "Cria fama y acuestate a dormir". Literal translation = Harvest fame and go to sleep. Meaning = Once you're famous you can come out with the dumbest shit and people will still buy it and applaud it, 'cuz you're famous. Case in point: Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber (even if I am sadly a fan), and seriously I could sit here all day writing about untalented famous people but then that would just be me hating because I'm not that talented yet I still want to be famous.

Instead I'll go drink some wine and light a candle to the Famosity gods. SHIT! I wrote a book in your comments' section again, soweeee. My flight departs tonight so it's definitely time to get shitfaced.

Ciao ciao bello!

Hahaha.

1. I so totally agree with you, darling. Seriously, once you've skimmed a full page worth of those ridiculous things, you've seen them all. I cannot comprehend why people thought they were certainly all the rage...whatever.

2. Ha.. I like Maureen's idea with contacting the producers of the show and letting them know why they are the lowest, runniest, most diarrhea-y disgusting pieces of shit on the entire planet. (in the nicest and most respectful way possible, of course). And I also think you should start a petition and get everyone's name to just send all in one document to them so they're not flooded by so many emails for them to automatically send to the trash.

3. 500?!?! Holy shit!!! :). I'm so proud of you. Also, I think your blog is laid out pretty perfectly... Everyone, old or new to your blog, seems to really really enjoy reading it, whether it's funny or more on the serious side. Keep at it.

4. I really am kinda sick of seeing that picture, even tho it still makes me laugh. I'm very upset that Obama is opposed to gay marriage...just so stupid. He's supposed to be liberal here, come on now... Wycleff...rapper...?? For president of Haiti??? I'm just not following here... That picture makes him look like such a prick. Maybe his plane will crash in the sea somewhere and he'll be ripped apart by sharks...or maybe irony will get him and one of his overly-expensive vehicles will crush him.

5. Rush limbaugh is the biggest most disgusting piece of human refuge on this planet. Right on up there with the visionaries (and parents) of the tots in whore outfits. Civil war my ASS. What a ship full of shit. I guarantee that there are waaaay more people waaaay more pissed off because they're still not free to do what they want....hmm....in america....home of the...free? Right? Fucktards.

Sorry I wrote the equivalent to one of your posts here...I just had a lot to respond to this one. Got my blood boiling a bit :)
I loooooove you.

Oh I forgot about the Rapper who wants to be President of Haiti, I say let him, they will kill him just as quick as they will on the streets of LA. Ca, all they have to do is get tired of the BS< and then they will steal his cars. lol

I think gay rights are very important. It's a vital step in the long road to equality. I think you can't deny some citizens certain rights if others do have these rights. That's discrimation.

Luckily, here in the Netherlands, homosexuals have the same rights everybody else has. Now, I hope the right decision will be made and that, eventually, all humans can be seen as equal (and be treated that way too).

ok, I'll tackle this by the numbers:
1. I'm an occasional reader of LOLcats, and it is occasionally funny.
2. Form letter, that way the lazy people that we are can just copy, paste and send.
3. don't pander to what other people want you to write about.
4. many peoplle are of the same opinion re: rubber stamp. Most justices who come on with this thought from the public prove the public wrong. Wyclef Jean is Haitian. Not that he isn't arrogant, but he is at least from the country in which he is seeking election.
5. Rush is a nutsack on the air. He may have alternate personal beliefs, but he makes money from being divisive.

grrrl in green said...

I like what you said about the LOLcats. It made me chuckle a couple times.

The blog ended on a more serious note however. I'm glad you talked about Proposition 8 being overturned. I was against it from the minute I heard about it and I am happy it didn't go through.

I have a lot to say about the video clip of Rush Limbaugh and all of which are not the nicest things in the world. I guess it can be summed up in one word: REALLY!?!? I can't believe he said all that. People should not be told who they can and cannot marry. If a man and a man and a women and women want to marry they should be allowed to. Its the rights as an American citizen and if he wants to America to go back, oh 60 years, good luck with that.

Anyway great post. I've enjoyed everything I have read by you so far. Keep up the awesome work! :)

Okay, I have two things. One, I actually just went back and read all of your blog posts yesterday too. I think you're hilarious. Two, I think Prop 8 being overturned is one of the best things to happen in this country in a long time. I even posted my first and only political blog because of it. I think you're awesome! Keep it up. : )

Meagooo :) said...

I wonder how long the overturnment (that's totally not a word but whatever) is going to last. It's sad that people are so arrogant. This makes me want to bunch their children. On the brighter side... Yay for followers!

Jenny Dudek said...

I like your blog, it's mostly interesting. I just had a few things to consider...
Wyclef's Hati Relief Website and Mission:
"In practical terms this translates to over 3,000 new jobs, close to 7,000 children being put in school, more than 8,000 people a month receiving food and approximately 2,000 young people a month learning about HIV/AIDS prevention."
http://www.yele-haiti.org/mission/
*It's easy to make fun of people who look ridiculous, but hey, at least he just doesn't complain and do nothing about it.
*I don't think that he would be any more corrupt than any of the Hati politician / president. He seems to have already done more than they have.
*He can't get elected unless they change their constitution because he moved as a child to America.
*If he is allowed to run, he will probably win because they love him, they don't view him as a white middle class american male would.
(just some thoughts to consider)

I'm pissed that Obama hasn't accomplished as much as he claimed he would, yet at the same time, I don't really know if anyone could in this situation - the inability of any side to agree or compromise. I don't think we need just another party - Libertarian, I think we need a lot more parties. And I think it's funny that Libertarians are so vehement that they can fix everything, by getting rid of big government. I looked at the blog you mentioned in your post, complaining about 2% of Americans getting a tax increase? Please! Eliminate the Department of Education and any Czar's simply because you don't like that word,... this seems like a lot of "ideas" about how things can magically be fixed with little or no evidence about how this will help.

I've never heard of LOL Catz, but it really doesn't sound like I'm missing much. I think cats are evil, especially since I found out that my son is allergic to them (and peanuts, but that's another rant for another day). Not to mention the fact that my kids can't play in their sandbox since the neighbor's cat decided to use it as a litterbox. But I digress...

I'd be all about signing a letter and sending it to the Toddlers and Tiaras people. Side note: Apparently BBC America has some special coming out about parents and the "controversial" things they do with their kids. Child beauty pageants are going to be a topic. I'm not sure if I want to watch it, though. I'd just get pissed off.

I'm glad your blog is growing so much so fast. You put quality stuff out there for us to read, therefore you deserve it. Enjoy, and don't get intimidated. We're here, aren't we? :)

And even though I bitterly dislike Rush, I'm glad you brought up that point - we can all give our opinions, no matter what we believe, no matter how ridiculous (to others).

Lolcats has definitely run it's course for me. I used to be able to spend hours laughing at the silly pictures and intentional bad grammar, but now, it's just "meh" for me.

TnT is garbage and all those involved should be punished. 'Nuff said.

Yay for 500 followers! You deserve them.

I'm not well versed in politics, frankly it bores me. But I was very pleased to see the ruling on Prop 8. It doesn't mean that things are automatically better, but it is a step in the right direction.

I laugh at the thought of a rapper being president of a country, but if he does get elected, and he does a good job, good for him.

Oh, Rush. Did you leave your common sense at home again?

What is lolcats? Sounds stupid.

As does Obama on this one. Thanks for bringing it to my attention because, thanks to motherhood, I don't get to keep up on politics like I once did.

SO excited about Prop 8 being overturned. I plan on writing a blog about the judge's statements, which I think are beautifully written and amazing.

Speaking of beautifully written, just keep doing what you're doing. Block out the audience and amuse yourself.

And your loyal first readers!

to be fair, obama does not support gay marriage but supports civil unions. he has already pushed through legislation to give same sex couples in the federal government the same rights as hetero couples. he is all for the repeal of don't ask, don't tell and is against DOMA (defense of marriage act).

so while he technically does not support gay marriage, he is very supportive of the lgbt community.

from the same article you quoted, but not edited:

"But for backers of same-sex marriage rights, Wednesday’s court victory brought a reminder that one powerful voice is not in their camp: President Obama.

“The president opposed Proposition 8 at the time,” said David Axelrod, a top adviser, on MSNBC Thursday morning. “He felt that it was divisive. He felt that it was mean-spirited.”

But, Mr. Axelrod continued: “The president does oppose same-sex marriage, but he supports equality for gay and lesbian couples in benefits and other issues.”

Mr. Axelrod noted that Mr. Obama backs civil unions."

The Back Nine said...

Gay liberal Democrat here who will NOT be so quick to cast another vote for Mr. Obama in 2012. He's trying to have it both ways. He can't come out and openly support marriage as being anything than what it's always been traditionally defined as since would lose much of his center-moderate-right moderate support. Granted, he'd reignite his liberal base but we all know, that's not how you win elections.

And in the end, the reality of it is WINNING, not actually DOING what you said you intended to do....what you were ELECTED to do. Sad, but true.

And as far as what you need to change, I don't know. I'm a Christian and I don't think I agree with everything you say some, but I've only gotten started on reading the whole nipple removal thing (which is I already knew was fake but the delivery sounded like it was real -- I couldn't not like you for it). The fact that I'm still trying to see what you write next says that this is a good blog. It's interesting because you say what we're actually thinking anyways. It's more cohesive than you think. It's relatable. You at least found your voice. It's hard to do in this cruel world. God bless you.

All: Sometimes I go off a little half cocked, so I humbly recant my statement that Wycleff ought to "fuck himself"... although I still seriously doubt the ability of the man pictured in this post to govern an entire country that needs a few thousand simultaneous miracles in order to become a reasonable place to live and work. Perhaps his time and effort are better used creating awareness and raising money. Perhaps his celebrity and his being of haitian origin don't make him automatically the best candidate for a life in presidential politics. Maybe.

annah: Chupacabras are terrifying vampire animals. and it baffles the mind that people are making money from "lolcats". But yes, it appears that famosity is nearly mine. (that's my first time using your word "famosity"!) If this blog and my book don't make me famous, than I will become famous by doing horrible horrible things in public while naked.

Daver: HAHAHA. Kitten killing is a real man's sport! too rich. I love you too man, and indeed, we all were created equal.

Jera: Thank you for you love and anger. *big kiss* ;-)

Cooltobehuman: I think we are the road to some kind of civilized equality, but I still think it's going to take a while. Whatever I could do to speed it up, though, I would. Thanks for visiting.

J9: "Rush is a nutsack"? hahaha. Thank You! Very well put. and I think we will do the form letter thing, and possibly quote some of the comments that were left regarding this topic here... keep an eye out I should get something put together by next week sometime.

grrrl: thanks! Rush is quite a dipshit sometimes. He can be taken as comedy though, and when he is, he is quite funny. I think I will send him a box of percocets to thank him for his work.

Faris: thank you, I'm flattered!

Toni: You read them all too?!? That is so cool! Although... maybe not for you. There's some pretty questionable and boring stuff in there.

meagooo: Indeed. I am going to assume you meant "punch" their children, and I am going to agree with that sentiment.

Charles said...

Jenny: Thanks for commenting. I did go overboard on Wycleff, as I mentioned above. Point taken.

Regarding your other thoughts: I agree that we ought to have many more parties. A proportionately representative congress would be great. It would allow parties like the green party and the libertarian party to get some publicity and public backing like they never have before, and it would lead to greater ability for compromise in the legislature.

I do happen to believe in a way that aligns me with the libertarian party. And for good reason. I don't dislike the idea of "czars" because of the name. I dislike bureaucracy in general because it consistently behaves as if it were an organism separate from the entity that is the United States, competing, in a way, for the money and power of the rest of the government and the people. It evolves, like an organism, getting bigger and better at doing what it does: consuming money and resources. In the perfect world some democrats envision, these entities keep themselves in check through some magic inherent altruism. But humanity is not altruistic. Period. To look at big government as a series of selfish organisms makes sense, as any bureaucracy consists of people who, at the end of the day, are looking out for number one first. The "czars" represent the arbitrary creation of new levels of bureaucracy, to me. Bad deal.

You mention the educational system. One of the most tremendously wasteful and ineffective bureaucracies out there. Check this out: http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/2009/09/30/chart-of-the-day-federal-ed-spending/

I do fear big government. I fear that even if it is legislated with the best of intentions, it still evolves as a "meme", a sociological packet of culture, doing it's best to make the most room for itself. To consume more and more every year.

If one could say little evidence exists showing that a more libertarian government would be successful, I would merely counter that a system closer to socialism lacks the same evidence, especially in a country with the scope and scale of the USA.

Definitely a place to start that it sounds like would satisfy both of us would be to move towards a style of government more open to smaller parties. An election system that was less polarizing.

Again, I really appreciate your comments.

Candice: Sorry about your son's allergies. But glad to see that you are enjoying the blog. You are not missing much with LOLcats.

Erica: Rush had common sense?!?

sucker: thanks for your support! And yes: cats are awesome. Look out for more on the toddlers show soon.

alexa: Yeah. Obama is in support of "civil unions"... which I liken to being in support of "separate but equal". But I will try to forget some of my audience while writing, for objectivity. But you know very well that there are some of you I am not going to be able to forget about when writing :-). And lolcats is not worth your time, 'cause eventually it will push it's way into your life anyway. It's very powerful, as cultural phenomena go.

Jamie: You are the hero of this whole blog post! YAY! :-) and you didn't miss much with the Rush clip. It was just him being a moron.

luna: thank you very much!

steph: I posted the link to the Times article in hopes that people would glance over the full, unabridged text. Indeed, Obama supports civil unions, which, like I said to alexa, I see as similar to "separate but equal" laws. I find it gross.

BackNine: It is indeed sad. It would be so refreshing to see a politician really REALLY stand on principle more often. Obama seems to falter here significantly in many areas. But then, I lament about the choices we have as voters. Damned if we do. Damned if we don't.

Alexis: thank you for visiting and commenting. We welcome all kinds here. I'm offensive, to be sure, but I also feel everyone ought to have a voice. I appreciate what you said.

Ranter: Thanks for the tips. And for the congrats! *blogger high five* I think i will use your idea about copying and pasting elements from some of the comments for the "toddlers" thing.

If you want real advice on what you should do to keep readers/get more readers, I say keep that up, even though it must be pretty time consuming at this point. I consistently respond to blogs where I get acknowledgement from the author, and quickly give up (commenting, not necessarily reading) on blogs where I get nothing back.

I think it's the best thing a blogger can do to keep readership.

As for Rush - I can't tolerate him so I don't listen. I did see him on a talk show once and when he's just being his real self he seems like much less of a dick than when he's on the air.

I know Wycliffe is from Haiti but still...does just being from there, having money and being "famous" qualify him? I like your suggestion. Sell all your own stuff and go live among the people there if you really want to help. Open up the governor's mansion and make it into a zillion apartments instead of home for one family.

Do you like Pearl Jam?

Poor babies!! I can't believe that make up thing is really happening!
Anyway. I really enjoy reading your blog too.
Greetings from Spain.

I know, Rush having common sense is a myth. It was a nice try though. :P

I don't comment often but I have got to agree with you on the prop 8 thing.

They did a poll here in Oz recently and forty six percent of people were opposed to gay marriage. I was shocked. On what grounds? We are not a particularly religious country so the whole 'cause it is against God' argument not a big winner.

Why do 46% of Australians give a crap about something that does not concern them?

david: I checked out your blog. the picture of you on the huge billboard is priceless! I'll check back when I get a minute. Thanks, man.

lissmami: LOL i love that there is a "2a" instead of just a "3". I am looking up the dog/ cat thing now.

joe: I am in complete agreement with your statement which was more eloquent than my original. Please stop making me sound like a jack ass.

alexa: I try to respond to all the comments that I can... but then I get a little imbalanced and out of touch with other people's blogs because of the time expenditure involved here.... it's a delicate thing and I am working the scales hard to find a middle path here.

levonne: thanks for stopping by. I will be over to your blog asap. But i find myself saying that a lot so if I don't find my way there, you may have to remind me. There are so many awesome blogs to try to check out!

Barbara: You have been around here longer than almost anyone else! Thanks for stickin' around. And yes I do really like Pearl Jam.

lastchild: Hola! Bienvenidos! Glad you like the blog.

Erica: lol

hot breaking news: Those numbers surprise me as well... I usually think of Australia as being a little more left leaning in that area.... thanks for the comment, I may need to look that up.

I stopped taking Rush Limbaugh seriously when he openly mocked Michael J. Fox and said that the actor was "overexaggerating the effects of Parkinson's disease". He's also a pill popping junkie, as evidenced by his conviction for prescription fraud, not to mention a racist (Barack The Magic Negro and Donovan McNabb remarks)

This isn't the first time he's called for civil unrest. Who can can forget his ultimate aspirations for that ridiculous "Operation Chaos" before the last Presidential election, desiring ....and I quote...."a re-creation of Chicago 1968 with burning cars, protests, fire, and literal riots and all of that, that is the objective here."

He started out as a failed Top-40 radio disc jockey but now, I firmly believe that this disgusting and deplorable man is a real threat to the security of the country.

hahaha Wyclef even has a song called "If I Were President".... he must have been planning this for a while.

See and I thought Wyclef stepped down from head of his charity because of all that business about not paying taxes ... when really he just was planning to run for office! Oh, this explains it. Just a conflict of interest or too much work or something, I'm sure! ... Actually, Wyclef is still a Haitian citizen as I understand it, and only had that one kinda-good song with Santana on it; so I'm cool with him gettin outta here and going to do his thing somewhere else! ;)

...Oh, P.S. I saw someone talking about the LOL cats (or however its spelled) on "The View" while flipping through the other morning, like the site was the new, hot things. I love my cat, dig cats in general, but just never got into that. Hunh.

Charles -

found my way to your blog via elsewhere (can't remember where). unoriginally, i will also remark by numbers:

1) LolCats. I have 2 cats myself, they are funnier and more amusing than most of the still shots that LolCats has. The pics with the super-sized fat cats are horrendous.

2) Toddlers & Tiaras. Never watched it, never had the desire. I've seen the previews, and it looks like a train wreck that I could turn away from with a completely clear conscience fail to call 911 to report.

3) Blog News. Congrats on 500+ followers. Maybe someday down the line I can think about having that many followers. That would be neat.

4) In the News.
A) Elaine Kagan is far from attractive, but the Baby Ruth bar doesn't detract from the picture.
B) Prop 8 - I was a political science major to start college and finished with a major in Psychology instead. Political science ended up being my minor because I didn't want to take classes for another. Politics in this country blows, end of story.
C) Wyclef Jean - I forgot he was still around. After a little bit of research, I found as well he has done quite a bit for Haiti. Unlike the politicians they have now, he is rich enough (see car behind him in your picture) that he could ignore the bribes.

5) Rush is a pain, and we can't do much until he yells "Fire" in a crowded movie theater.

Again nice work, and you have another follower.

Rush is a d-bag. I don't like to say mean things but he is a gross hateful man. The picture of E.K. is too much. Where did you get that? So glad about prop 8 being overturned. I don't understand why people gotta be so hateful. No one is forcing them to marry anyone but who they want. Anyway, good conversation.

Congrats for the five hundred followers!!Writing TLC, I think you should do up a letter and let us copy and paste etc, many letters may have a better visual impact than a petition. I am a dog person and Wyclef's bid for Presidency in Haiti may be laudable but in my ever-so-humble opinion I don't think I can be convinced it's in Haiti's best interests. Yes he runs a charity that does good work but that is a vastly different thing from running a country, can he identify with the average Haitian? I would prefer Haiti not be saddled with yet another idealist for a President but rather a realist who knows his people and his country. Haiti has suffered long enough.

This whole lolcatz thing? I had never even heard of this site (am I sheltered or something?) It doesn't really matter though because I totally do not even speak the language used on that website. (I can NOT handle it... why is it so hard for some people to speak/write properly?)

Back Nine: Never heard of operation chaos but I will google search it now. Sounds like more crap that will be funny if I can force myself to forget that someone meant it seriously.

Mae: That is crazy! He may have been.

Tatyanna: I asked my cat if she wanted to be a LOLcat, and she told me to "go screw myself".

googlover: I added the candy bar and chocolate smears myself with photoshop. I love that picture. I may have to go back on my word and use it again sometime. :-)

Geets: I am inclined to agree with everything you said. Tomorrows project is to write out a letter like you mentioned.

Jenni: I agree. I guess some people find it quaint and cute. I for one find it... almost dehumanizing in a way.

So, let me get this straight: It's not okay for the parents involved in that toddler show to teach their daughters that women are judged solely on looks, but it's okay for you to make judgments (no pun intended, but it's there anyway) about Kagan because you don't like her looks?
Uh, yeah. Not that I agree with dressing little girls up as prostitutes, but it seems to me that their learning that men are going to judge their brains by their looks for their whole lives isn't such a bad thing, since it's pretty much true.
But you'll probably just discount this comment if I tell you I'm middle-aged and chubby.

Charles said...

Paper back: I do feel that it is ok to publicly satire, in any way, any figure who by her own choosing finds herself into the public eye. ESPECIALLY Supreme Court Justices. ;-)

But, to be certain, I don't mistrust Kagan because of the way she looks. I mistrust her because of her apparent adoration of big government and increased presidential power.

Supplementally: she is very quick witted and would probably be a fun person to hang out with. She was articulate and funny during her approval hearings.

And I plan on being middle aged and chubby myself some day!

Abbey-Kimmy said...

"In the news, Elena Kagan was approved as the new Supreme Court Justice, and she is still ugly."

So while you mock mothers of pre-adolescent beauty queens for over-emphasizing external beauty (which you are totally correct in doing, I might add), you're still willing to dismiss Elena Kagan's worth as a human being because she doesn't meet your arbitrary standard of beauty?

Charles said...

Abbey: Thanks for your comment. For my response, please refer to the two comments immediately preceding yours.

Again, careful attention will show that any issue I have with Kagan is absolutely not based on how she looks.

hey. i found your blog because it was on that special tab thingy on my blogger home that said "blogs of note." hows that for famosity? booya.

DarcC said...

It's not the fact that you don't find Elena Kagan attractive that's the issue. It's the fact that you use her non-conformance to societal beauty standards as a put-down. Late breaking news - societal beauty standards are artificial and no woman can meet them without an airbrush. They are, by design, unattainable, so that no woman can ever be good enough (translation: as good as a man). If Elena Kagan's politics are what prevents you from endorsing her than that is what you should focus you commentary on.

I also want to express kudos to you on your vocal opposition of the TLC show, a show of which I was previously unaware. I think your heart is in the right place, however, societal norms, however wrong, are so ingrained in us from birth that you can oppose the T&T show while putting down Kagan for her looks without seeing the inherent conflict therein.
